The fair in 2026

Smaller on Purpose

Art Basel Miami Beach has spent most of its life getting bigger. This year it has chosen to shrink. The exhibitor list published on September 29 names 272 galleries and platforms from more than 40 countries, against 283 in 2025, on a floor about 12% smaller.

The cut falls hardest on the main Galleries sector, down from 226 exhibitors to 204. There are four hospitality plazas where there were five, and the largest galleries are spread across the floor instead of grouped at its center. Meridians, the sector for large-scale work, is absent from the announcement.

“Our exhibitors have reinforced the value of a more focused environment, and the smaller footprint is a deliberate choice in service of that.”

— Bridget Finn, Director, Art Basel Miami Beach, to The Art Newspaper

What arrives is still substantial: more than 30 newcomers, first-time exhibitors from The Bahamas, Estonia, Georgia, Ghana, and Hungary, a second edition of the digital sector Zero 10 under the title Generation, and a new outdoor work by James Turrell. Read against a year in which Pace cut its roster and galleries closed branches, the smaller floor looks less like a local decision than a symptom.

The People of Miami

A fair week is built by people who rarely see the fair: art handlers with cordless drills, convention center crews, hotel staff, baristas in Wynwood on their best sales week of the year, and the artists who open their studios to strangers. This guide is dedicated to them.

A Year at Two Speeds

Much of the trade lands in Miami in the first week of December, and it brings the year with it. Auction rooms have had their best run since 2022. Galleries have been cutting artists, staff, and fair booths. Miami is where the two meet.

Flashback · December 2002

The Fair That Waited a Year

Art Basel Miami Beach was supposed to open on December 13, 2001. More than 150 galleries had confirmed. After September 11 the organizers postponed the first edition by a full year; only five galleries had withdrawn. The fair that opened in December 2002 had 160 galleries and drew 30,000 visitors. In 2025 it counted 283 galleries and more than 80,000. A fair that began by waiting out a crisis is now choosing to be smaller.
