Four districts and a hub

Where the Galleries Are

Art Week NYC follows the map of New York’s gallery world as it is now: Chelsea, still the largest district; Tribeca, which has drawn many galleries south since about 2020; the Lower East Side and the edge of Chinatown; and the Upper East Side, where galleries on and around Madison Avenue sit among the museums. ARTnews says its editor-led tours will run “from the Upper East Side to Chinatown.”

The examples below are galleries on the Art Week list with a well-known space in each district. Several galleries have more than one New York space, and the organizers have not said which they will use, so check each gallery’s site before you set out. Biennale’s grouping

Four Routes

Chelsea and the High Line, half a day. Start at the Whitney, 99 Gansevoort Street, climb onto the High Line at Gansevoort and walk north. Drop down at West 20th, 22nd, 24th and 26th Streets for the galleries between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues; the big spaces on West 24th Street are the densest block. The FLAG Art Foundation is on West 25th Street.

Tribeca to the Bowery, half a day. Begin on lower Broadway in Tribeca, work through Walker and White Streets, cross Canal into Chinatown and continue east to Eldridge and Orchard Streets. Finish at the New Museum on the Bowery. On Saturday, November 14, this route ends at the talks.

Madison Avenue to the Armory, a day. From the Frick at East 70th Street, walk Madison Avenue for the galleries, turn east to the Park Avenue Armory at East 66th to 67th Streets for the ADAA Fair (from Friday), then go north up Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile: the Met at 82nd Street, the Guggenheim at 88th to 89th, the Jewish Museum at 92nd, and the Museum of the City of New York and El Museo del Barrio at 103rd to 105th.
